As councillor for Tressell Ward, and as council leader, I got to know Aubrey in his activities to protect Speckled Wood, and its enjoyment by local people. When I was first elected as councillor, Speckled Wood was largely inaccessible, and was earmarked for housing development. Aubrey was already campaigning to save the woodland, and to open up footpaths through the woodland to make it more accessible, initially in his membership of Ore Valley Action, then as a volunteer with Ore Community Land Trust. His local knowledge was detailed and fascinating, which he put to use with occasional guided tours of the woodland. Thanks in part to Aubrey's work, Speckled Wood was redesignated as protected open space in the council's local plan, and is now widely used by children, dog walkers, families and voluntary groups. I'll miss his dogged determination to protect our natural spaces, and his tireless insistence on what he believed was right. We didn't always agree, but that didn't matter - he was a model of how to work in one's own community to make it better for everyone.
